TrendChip Technologies Licenses MIPS32 24KE and MIPS32 34K Cores for Cutting-Edge Broadband Access Solutions
2007-06-19

MIPS Technologies, Inc. today announced that TrendChip Technologies Corp., a leading Taiwan-based developer of ADSL chipsets, has licensed the MIPS32 24KE and multi-threaded MIPS32 34K processor cores for next-generation broadband access products.
TrendChip joins the list of Taiwanese companies currently developing MIPS-Verified designs for digital home, networking, communications and portable entertainment applications. The rapid adoption of MIPS in Taiwan has contributed to making the Greater China region the fastest-growing market for MIPS worldwide.
According to In-Stat Research, the global broadband subscriber base will reach 567 million by 2011 — nearly double the current total of 285 million worldwide. DSL and cable modem services are the top access technologies, providing 92% of worldwide broadband connections.
"Today's broadband SOCs must meet superior levels of performance to support increased functionality, faster data streams, and rapidly evolving industry standards," said Shin-Jou Fang, CEO of TrendChip. "Leveraging the industry-leading 24KE cores and multi-threaded 34K family gives us the ability to deliver powerful VDSL2 designs that are also energy- and cost-efficient." The high-performance 24KE cores incorporate efficient DSP capability while significantly reducing overall SOC die area, cost, and power consumption and improving signal processing performance. The first MIPS cores to exploit multi-threading for embedded applications, the 34K core family delivers significant gains in system performance and cost savings, with a very modest increase in die size.
